Centrifugal barrel finishing, as one important kind of typical part surface finishing, has been widely recognized in the machining field. However, the centrifugal barrel finishing has difficult in determining the processing parameter due to the complex movement of the abrasive particles, which limits further development and high-end applications. The finishing process of centrifugal barrel finishing has been investigated by discrete element numerical method, hoping to solve the problems on the relevant process parameters determined. The main research of paper is as follows:1. By analyzing the motion state of the centrifugal drum, the motion mechanism at arbitrary point within the drum has been determined. In addition, the movement mechanism of the abrasive particles seen as a whole has been analyzed, and the forming reason of the "forced layer flow" by abrasive particles has been studied.2. Through parameter calibration method, the coefficients of friction have been calibrated using angle of repose as the optimization target. The orthogonal experiment with interaction has been applied during the calibration process considering the interaction between the parameters. The calibration results show that the particle friction properties have been calibrated.3. Applying the discrete element method(DEM) to centrifugal mass finishing process due to the limitations of computing power consumes too much time to complete the simulation. By comparing the three existed techniques for minimizing the computational cost of discrete element simulation, one such method has been proposed which can effectively improve the speed of the discrete element simulation.4. By means of discrete element numerical simulation, the centrifugal barrel finishing process has been investigated. The mutual verification between simulation and theoretical analysis about abrasive particles on vertical and horizontal plane. During the analysis of the abrasive particles move around its barycenter on horizontal plane, the distribution characteristics inside the drum are analyzed finding that the motion status of abrasives meet the Maxwell velocity distribution law. In addition, the critical value of transmission ratio is finally determined under given situation for optimize the motion status of the abrasive particles.5. In the analysis of the vertical centrifugal barrel finishing process, it is discovered that stratifications do exist between the part and the abrasive particles of different shapes which called the phenomenon of "Brazil-Nut Segregation" and "Reverse Brazil-Nut Separation" in the field of granular media. This paper makes the parameterization and quantitative analysis from various aspects for abrasive particles in the Centrifugal Barrel Finishing using DEM. The results on the one hand improve the theory of the centrifugal mass finishing, on the other hand optimize a number of simulation experiment process to accelerate the new equipment development cycle, which have great significance for the further development and application of surface finishing technology.
