The haulage mode of modern shearer is mainly cog wheel-pin track chainless traction, cog wheel is used as important mechanism to transmit torque and drive shearer walking, is also one of the key parts of shearer. With total power increasing, the weight of machine body is bigger and bigger, however, the service life becomes shorter. This paper uses theoretical analysis combined with infinite element method to simulate and compare engagement characteristic of homemade and foreign cog wheel under different center distances.The main finished research works are as follows:(1) It uses theoretical analysis to study the restraint relationship of three matched machines—the shearer, conveyor and hydraulic support, it concludes that the cog wheel should be adapted to specific parameters including variable center distance, variable pitch, etc.(2) It summarizes and analyzes the failures of homemade 147 mm pitch cog wheel in the process of operation, points out the problems of current cog wheel shape are short mating surface, unreasonable tooth curve and narrow tooth root.(3) It uses software ABAQUS to build the finite element models of homemade cog wheel and the foreign one engaging with pin-rack separately under different center distances. The results suggest: The foreign cog wheel is better than the homemade engaging with pin-rack separately under standard center distance and maximum center distance; Engaging with pin-rack under minimum center distance, both the fluctuation and amplitude of contact stress of the foreign cog wheel are bigger than the domestic, but the fluctuation of bending stress of tooth root is very stable, and the peak value is smaller than the domestic’s.(4) Two specimens had been Manufactured according to the foreign cog wheel tooth profile,and applied in coal mine,it has been proved that the working life of the two specimens is largely longer than the current homemade.
