Xijiang River Basin is an important area with river system as the main clue in CulturalGeography Division of South China. It had been the core area and then turned marginal during theperiods of history. The social development and cultural characteristics are shaped by the NorthernHan moving southward, the Yao and Zhuang people’s intergrowth and battle with the Han, theGarrison Reclamation System in Ming Dynasty, cultivation of the Pearl River Delta, thecommercialization process of South China and the local worship spreading, which also result in thehighly variegated and complicated Architectural Culture of the area. The thesis takes TraditionalVillage Morphology as the point of penetration, which would be disassembled to different patternsthrough Typology Method. To discuss the Architectural Culture Division of the Xijiang River Basin,the Traditional Village Morphology Model would combine with the context of the area’senvironmental and social developments, and would be additional supplied by case studiesespecially in Family System.The first chapter explains the origin, significance of the study, and the definition and boundaryof ‘Xijiang River Basin’,‘Traditional Village Morphology’and other objects of the research. Thenmakes a review of not only the research on the architectural history of South China especially aboutXijiang River Basin, but also the research on South China about its economy, environment andsociety, and introduces the study frame and methodology.The second chapter analyses the formation of traditional village morphology and morphologytypes of folk houses and group of dwellings in Xijiang River Basin, where the morphology typesof image and master plans of the whole village are discussed in the third chapter. The TraditionalVillage Morphology Typology Model in Xijiang River Basin is built on morphology types of thefactors above. The forth chapter focuses on the Architectural Culture Division of the Xijiang RiverBasin, based on the context of the area and the distribution of different village morphology typesshowed in the Typology model. The last chapter supplies the Typology model through casescomparison studiesIt is important to discuss the Traditional Village Morphology Typology Model andArchitectural Culture Division of the Xijiang River Basin, which would somehow show a pictureof a marginal area and the history of a different side.
