With the development of economic construction in China, some cities have been builtBypass Expwy (Expressway) to alleviate traffic pressure of urban centers. Because of theBypass Expwy connected with radiation expwys、national and provincial higyways and cityroads, large numbers of interchanges with small space entrances which cover a wide areaalong the route, guiding large amount of information, after some Bypass Expwy put into use,often appear the sign of information overload, lack of continuity in information, andinformation level is not clear. In order to realize the traffic function of Bypass Expwy, weshould solve the above problems.This paper relies on transport technology projects for2012of Shaanxi ProvincalCommunications Department, on the basis of summarizing the application situations of guidesign and development of related specifications in China and abroad, using basic theory andmethod of traffic engineering, traffic psychology, traffic safety and information theory andother professional and related subjects, to optimize the guide sign of Bypass Expwy.Firstly, determining the important principle in guide sign of Bypass Expwy, analysisdrivers’ cognitive processes and information needs of different traffic folw, then divising thenodes of Bypass Expwy into hub interchange、sub-hub interchange and general interchange,and analyse setting location and supporting way for different layout of different nodes.Secondly, in the background of digital traffic sign’s application trends, on the base ofdomestic and foreign experts’ study on information threshold, determining that theinformation shreshold between6to9is better, and grading the guide information, choosingShaanxi province for example, and then determining the classification method of BypassExpwy, and information of different layouts for different nodes. Thirdly, this paperdetermining the optimization idea and principle of quality of information for guide signs,dividing the Bypass Expwy into nodes unit and main unit for optimization. Finally, as Xi’anBypass Expwy for example, analyze the traffic function of Xi’an Bypass Expwy anddetermine the content of optimization, selecting Liucunbu interchange and Chang’aninterchange as representative of different types of nodes for optimization design.
