Asphalt pavement milling machine is an efficient and modern road maintenancemachinery, playing an irreplaceable role in road maintenance work. It is a modern designmethod to use virtual reality technology to simulate mechanical engineering, reconstruct theoperation process, and investigate variation regularity of relevant parameters, which is ofgreat significance for mechanical products to reduce development costs, shorten developmentcycles and improve products design quality.In this paper, milling drum, as working device of asphalt pavement milling machine, isthe object of study. Firstly, the target analysis of the simulation system was conducted and thedeveloping tools and realization plan were chosen. And the development process was set.Secondly, professional mechanical design software SolidWorks was used in combination withrelated modeling techniques of visual simulation modeling software Multigen Creator to buildmilling drum, pavement, trees and other3D models; software development platform VisualStudio2005and the graphics library OpenGL was combined to display the discrete model ofasphalt pavement, completing the construction of simulation system scene. Thirdly, theconfiguration interface tools LynX Prime together with API functions of real-time3D virtualreality application development tools Vega Prime was applied to create the applicationprogram of the simulation system. And its expansion module Vortex for Vega Prime was usedto achieve cylindrical bounding volume collision detection. With Vega Prime combined withVisual Studio2005, the interfaces were designed by applying MFC, the simulation animationwas recorded.In this paper, the virtual simulation system was developed, which has a good sense ofreality, and more realistically simulates the process of milling drum’s milling operations. Thesimulation system can be applied to the milling drums operation simulation of differentparameters, making it easy to design and optimize the milling drum. By users enteringdifferent parameters of pavement, the failure mechanism of asphalt mixture caused by millingcutters’ affecting can be studied. The results generated by the simulation system provide a visual reference to select the appropriate kinematic parameters and kinetic parameters, andfurther improve operation performance of the pavement milling machine. The method ofvisual simulation based on virtual reality technology explored in this paper can dynamicallyreconstruct milling operations process, which has a certain reference value for the design andresearch of other types of construction machinery.
