With the development of economy, people’s requirement to building not just tofulfil the basic living function, they hope to see many breakthroughs in building outlineshape, inner room conformability and facility intelligence. Based these requirements,there are higher standards to Mechanical、Electrical and Plumbing (MEP) design.Recent years, the new concepts like intelligent building, green building, low-carbonbuilding, etc. asking for more space to MEP layout. The collaboration design andcoordination among disciplines are become more difficult. In traditional2D MEPdesign, disciplines are work independently; the design information sharing cannot bedone timely, which result in many errors in final design scheme, for instance, pipesclash, this error has a big influence to schedule. At the same time, to complex andunregularly buildings,2D CAD cannot do an accuracy description to the buildinggeometry information. So for these reasons, there is a strong requirement to3Dconstruction documents.Building Information Modelling (BIM) provides a new solution to MEP design andconstruction. Recently, BIM application in china is mainly used in design phase, whichis leaded by MEP designers. However, for the reason of less experience of MEPdesigners, although BIM-based MEP design has a big improvement to designers’ workefficiency, MEP designers have a limited consideration to MEP scheme collaborationand optimization. There are still many rework and changes in construction phase. Thispaper will do a MEP constructability verification and optimization from the view pointof building life-cycle MEP design and construction.First of all, the state-of-art BIM research in MEP in international and china isdiscussed, this part has a further discussion of BIM tendency and main research area inthe world. Equally importantly, this paper proposes BIM-based MPE optimizationframework to solve the drawbacks of BIM application in MEP design and construction.Last but not least, two cases are chosen to verify the frameworks in this paper.
