Product design is a form of culture, constantly promoting the spread of culture and itsdevelopment; on the other hand, culture is the object and content of product design, increasing theconnotation and value and being the source and motivation of products. With the seriously increasingglobalization, research about regional traditional culture is getting more and more attention insociology and design fields. Culture-oriented design is the trend of the development of industrialdesign in the future and one of its most critical problem is how to integrate regional traditional cultureinto modern product design.Based on the critical regionalism as the guiding ideology and with the theory of semiotics,perceptual engineering methods, this paper constructs the region culture image into product designelements method theory and research system. In the process, this paper committed to conversingperceptual image of products to the quantitative objects, using the statistical method to establish thematrix of product design elements space and perceptual image value. It applies the neural networkalgorithm to build the product form elements and perceptual image correlation model, with the resultof elements combination plan under the specific design goal. In the design of furniture chair, forexample, with the goal of reflecting the region culture of the so-called traditional Southeast Chinese,set up by MATLAB computer software as the assistant tools to design system framework. From theperspective of critical regionalism, it emphasizes the combination of regional traditional culture andmodern design, the perceptual image quantitative and systematic, make the culture oriented productdesign more scientific and more practical guiding significant. Altogether it provides a reliable methodto refer to for design ideas and systems so that the product can satisfy the users’ perceptual demandand reflects regional culture and have more competition on the market.
