A Cable-Stayed Bridge consists of tensioned cables, compressed pylons (towers) andbended bridge deck. The cables transfer the load of bridge deck to the pylons to obtain astable structure. It is widely used in the China. This thesis will take Jiang Shun Bridge as an example to discuss the selection criteria ofbridge location and bridge structural type,as well as environmental impact of a proposedbridge construction.First of all, bridge location to be selected. The bridge was to be built either at the southor the north side. Two proposals were thoroughly compared in terms of the existing inter-citytransportation network between Jiangmen and Shunde, reasonable distance between thebridge and surrounding buildings, construction cost, etc. Considering the easy access to thenewly planned highway network of Foshan, and reasonable distance to the neighboringJiangxi Mega Bridge and Jiu Jiang Bridge, the north location is finally recommended.Secondly, given the water traffic condition, hydraulic management requirements, andthe river bed features, the main span of bridge shall be700meters at minimum. Thus, either suspension bridge or cable-stayed bridge can be chosen. After thorough site survey, academic research, overall comparison and analysis, three structural types were proposed, which were cable-stayed bridge with H-shaped towers,cable-stayed bridge with Y-shapedtowers and suspension bridge. After further analysis on the construction challenges, impactto the waterway and hydraulic resources, maintenance cost, landscaping and so on,thecable-stayed bridge with H-shaped towers is recommended. The following paragraphs willalso discuss the planning and engineering of the viaduct and crossing from both short-termand long-term perspectives. At last, this thesis will give a comprehensive assessment to the overall project proposal. In terms of use of land resources, this project may occupy arable land. In terms ofenvironmental impacts, construction activities will cause noises, air and water pollution, and disruption of water traffic. During the operation stage after completion, vehicles gasesand noises emission will have considerable impact to the surrounding environment. In terms of energy saving, the bridge lighting and maintenance works will consume powers in theform of electricity or fuel. However, this consumption is marginal compared to the fuelconsumption by the crossing vehicles. In terms of social impact, expropriation ofsurrounding arable land and houses is inevitable, which will have certain negative impact onthe production and living of the affected residences. In conclusion, the bridge project in discussion has been planned to minimize theexpropriation of arable land. Environmental impact will be gradually eliminated after projectcompletion. Energy demand will not exceed the current local supply capacity. Traffic will besignificantly improved upon completion. Moreover, affected residences will promptlyreceive sufficient compensation to rebuild their home elsewhere,so that social stability canbe secured. The Research of this project has a certain reference value for future similar projectselection and evaluation of project.
