The rapid development of highway construction has brought a serious shortage of rawmaterials. Stone is a common raw material for China’s road base and the proportion is bigger.Along with the building, rebuilding and expansion of the construction of highway project,supply shortages of high-quality stone have gradually appeared. Stone supply shortage willcause prices to rise, leading to a large number of stone mining, which would not only causedamage to the mountain, but also pose a threat to the ecological environment. To build aresource-saving and environment-friendly society, roads researchers gradually shift theirattention to the soil stabilizer stabilized base.Soil stabilizer is a new environmentally friendly, energy-saving materials and caneffectively improve soil physical-mechanical properties, so that it has better mechanical andpavement performance. In this paper, based on the key village road project of Shenmu countyin Shanxi province, application study in the base of SG-1soil stabilizer stabilized gravel soilhas started. At first, the properties of raw materials was tested, and the curing mechanism ofall kinds of soil stabilizer was analysed. By studying the the relationship between gradationand unconfined compressive strength, a suitable gradation range of soil stabilizer stabilizedgravel soil has been recommended. Using orthogonal test, the factors affecting the strength ofsoil stabilizer stabilized gravel soil base has been sorted. Through the indoor experiment,mechanical properties, drying shrinkage, water stability, frost resistance and erosion resistanceof soil stabilizer stabilized gravel soil base has been studied, compared with the cementstabilized gravel soil and cement stabilized crushed-stone. Through the material costcalculation, its economic viability was analyzed.In the age of180days, mechanical properties of SG-1soil stabilizer stabilized gravel soil(7%) is close to cement stabilized gravel soil (7%). But other pavement performances arebetter than cement stabilized gravel soil (7%). In the aspects of anti-erosion and abrasionresistance, high-dose (18%) soil stabilizer stabilized gravel soil is better than cementstabilized crushed-stone (5%). It is close to cement stabilized crushed-stone (5%) about waterstability and frost resistance. Its drying shrinkage is better than cement stabilized gravel soil(7%), but worse than cement stabilized crushed-stone (5%). Through the experiment, it was found that SG-1soil stabilizer stabilized gravel soil hadgood mechanical properties and pavement performance with economically viable and canreduce the use of stone to protect the environment. High-dose (18%) soil stabilizer stabilizedgravel soil has excellent mechanical performance and is a way to solve the problem ofincreasing axle load. The results of this study have important guiding value on the design andconstruction of SG-1soil stabilizer stabilized gravel soil base.
