With the expansion of college enrollment, many universities is faced withexpansion and new building. Newly built campus exist some problems although whichhad made great achievements at the same time, such as campus characteristics is notobvious, ignore users’ demand and so on, which are worth further observation andresearch. Reviewing of the literature and surveying of the user’ image, this paper hasevaluated and analyzed the outdoor space of Hefei university. On the basis of summingup the advantages and shortcomings of the outdoor space design, we put forwardprinciples and strategies so as to provide specific direction for the outdoor space of theuniversities.The space environment percepted in the memory image is called cognitive-map.The article summarized cognitive-map theories and practices, and got newly-builtuniversities’ cognitive components and influencing factors on the bases of urbancognitive elements. Then we established an cognitive and evaluated system ofnewly-built universities’ outdoor spatial. The image method, cognitive map,questionnaires and other cognitive method were used in investigating studentcommunity in Hefei newly-built universities. After that, we analyzed and evaluated thecampus outdoor space, which got the characteristics and deficiencies of Hefeinewly-built universities’ outdoor space. Space type is the priority cognitive map stagein Hefei newly-built university outdoor space type. The design of elements ispoorer.The rate of road factors in the student impression is higher, however whichdirection is not strong, and the accuracy of position is not high. The core region of thecampus is not clear. The distance of partition is not appropriate. There is somedifferent between the students’ public cognitive–map and planning center. There weresome blank and unrest area in the cognitive map of some universities, which showsthat the development land were not fully utilized. When the threshold of the publiccognitive range M1is about1/3and M2is about1/4, the hierarchy of campus outdoorspace is clear and focused, which can give students deep (agreed rate>70%) or moreprofound impression (agreed rate>50%).Although the belonging, security andcomfort of Hefei newly-built university outdoor space are very good, atmosphere,architecture and landscape characteristic is not bright. The design of the space environment, the characteristics of campus orientation and the subject combination arefaced with strengthen. Space structure of some campus is not clear. Some building orroad were named featureless. Some relationship of campus axis is not clear. Cognitivemap were is obviously professional and gender.Based on the above research, we put forward to regulation principle andcountermeasures of Hefei newly-built university outdoor space from the perspective ofcognitive, in the hope that we can provide specific operating mode for universityregulation. We should have overall and development vision on University regulation.On the basis of fully understanding the characteristics of the students, we shouldfollow such principles: in the use of level in line with the space system’ compound,elements’ correlation, uses’ participation, culture and discipline’ characteristic. Weshould mainly follow several aspects: Unify the style of functions and interrelate eachpartition; Enhance connotation of the sculpture and set characteristic markers’ system;Clear hierarchy of the core region and ensure accessibility of core area; Plan clear roadnetwork and highlight the axis system; Uniform the building style and highlight thepersonal characteristics; Determine appropriate position of the center landscape andcomplete the infrastructure; Clear theme of the campus and ensure continuity of roadlandscape; make full use of development and increase the efficiency of outdoor space.This article has constructed outdoor space cognitive evaluation system of theuniversity. The article has analyzed and evaluated cognitive status of Hefei newly-builtuniversities, which concluded the characteristics of the outdoor space and put forwardthe regulation principles and strategies. The article has certain theoretical and practicalsignificance. The article provide reference for evaluation and improvement directionfor other university outdoor space. We hope that planners could really consider theneeds of users in campus planning and believe “people formost”, and create adistinctive university outdoor space environment.
