During to its natures of clean, widely distributed and inexhaustible, Wind power has been developing rapidly recent years and come to be the largest and the fastest developed renewable energy. However, because of the random and intermittent nature of wind power, with the rapid growth of installed wind capacity and the constant enlargement of wind farm scale, large-scale grid-connected wind power has become a serious challenge to the operation safety, power quality and scheduling mechanism of power system. Therefore, the power grid must pay for the negative impacts caused by large-scale grid-connected wind power, such as peak load, reserve capacity and voltage regulation, which will certainly influence the economics of power grid. Most of China’s current renewable energy laws and regulations are made based on the ideas of promoting the development of wind power, which has greatly motivated the construction of wind farms, but the lack of responding supporting facilities and the incentives in the grid makes the low utilization rate of the large-scale wind farms and the waste of installed capacity. Therefore in the context of rapid development of wind power, the research of capacity of power system on acceptance of wind power is necessary.Current studies on capacity of grid on acceptance of wind power focuses on three aspects:firstly, capacity of wind power accommodation considering peak load and power transmission capacity of power system; secondly, capacity of wind power accommodation based on the stability of power system; finally, capacity of wind power accommodation based on power system economic dispatch. Obviously, most related studies about capacity of wind power accommodation focus on system security level, ignoring factors of economic benefit. Therefore, based on modern power system requirements of both security and economic, this paper aims to analysis the cost-benefit of power system with grid-connected wind power, and to explore the best capacity of wind power accommodation which can make the system benefit the best while meeting the security requirements.This paper quantitatively analyzed cost-benefit of wind farms, the grid and environment in a wind power-connected system. An evaluation model of Capacity of wind power accommodation was proposed with economic efficiency as objective function, considering profitability and security constraints of power grid, and then it was effectively solved by Differential Evolution algorithm. The evaluation model of CWPA was proved more economic by testing a RTS79system being compared with traditional method. Example analysis of RTS79test system also verified the effectiveness and practicability of the proposed evaluation method.
