Currently, the total consumption of energy and greenhouse gas emissions ranksfirst in the world. Under the pressures of energy shortages, climate anomalies, negotiations in international climate has been stalled, it’ is very urgent and necessaryto carry out energy-saving emission reduction work in the nationwide. Heating area ofnorthern existing buildings energy-saving projects have greater potential for energysaving, but there is also a higher initial investment, a multi-user involving, a longpayback period and other problems. In addition to government subsidies, financingcarbon trading, CDM Fund concessional loans and many other ways also have beenintroduced to solve the problem of funding the project. Whether participating incarbon trading at home and abroad or CDM Fund concessional loans is need to bequantified scientifically and reasonably for carbon emission reduction. Atpresent, China has no quantified methods to match carbon reduction yet,so it isurgent to research quantitative methods on energy-saving projects for the carbonemissions of existing buildings in the northern heating region. This paper studies on energy-saving projects of existing buildings in the northernheating region.Taking this area as an example and being based on industrialstandards, by reference to CDM methodology and European Union Emission TradingScheme, combining with the actual situation of the project construction ofenergy-saving heating areas of the north of existing building, quantitative methods ofthe carbon emissions are researched for projects of existing buildings with differentways of modification in the northern heating region in China. First, the necessity ofthe quantitative methods of carbon emissions reduction projects is analysed. Second, the paper analyses the importance and the difficuilty of undertaking to quantifycarbon emissions. Third, it gives the way the transformation of carbon reductionprojects in different calculations, monitoring, verification methods, and analyses thedifferences between the different reconstruction ways to quantitative methods forcarbon reduction projects. Finally, four project examples with different ways of thetransformation demonstrate the applicability and operability of the quantitativemethods proposed in this paper. With the help of enclosure structure, pipe networksystem and heat source reforming project examples, it analyses the impact of eachfactor on the results of carbon emissions to quantify. This method provides technicalguidance and reference for greenhouse gas calculations, smooth monitoring and verification on energy-saving projects of existing buildings in the northernheating region in China. It has a very important application value.
