| Chinese traditional settlements have strong traditional culture characteristic andunique culture heritage. Compared with single buildings, the space of settlements, being a necessary place of cultural life, reflects the spirits and cultural connotation ofhuman beings. With the rapid development of China’s urbanization, traditionalsettlements are confronted with a severe problem of unfavorable protection. Somesettlements begin to decline and even vanish. At present, the domestic research ofsettlement mainly focuses on the qualitative analysis of the buildings, settlement typesand settlement patterns, rarely using quantitative methods to describe the spatialmorphology of settlements. There are still shortcomings in the research of the spatialcharacteristics of complex settlements. From the perspective of spatial cognition, this paper aims to explore an effectivequantitative research method to analyze the spatial morphology of traditionalsettlements and apply the method in empirical research of Xidi. The researchcorrelates the morphological characteristics of the settlement with people’s subjectiveperception of feelings to explore the spatial morphology of Xidi, people’s spatialcharacteristics and cognitive mechanisms in complex environment. On the basis of traditional methods of spatial analysis, the research takesadvantage of the quantitative research methods such as space syntax and networkdensity to analyze the spatial morphology of Xidi. The research examines how thespace affects people’ spatial cognition and behavior by using the GPS trackingtechnology, virtual reality experiment and subjective questionnaires. By analyzing thetraces of the participants and the data of subjective feedbacks, the researchinvestigates how people construct the cognitive map in mind, generate spatial memoryand respond when exploring the environment. Furthermore, the interactionmechanism between the urban evolution and human behavior is investigated bycomparing the real town spatial structure, the spatial morphology of Xidi and theparticipants’ behavior trajectory. It provides new perspectives and technical means for researching and recordingthe characteristics of traditional settlement such as xidi by using the quantitativeresearch method to research the spatial morphology of settlement and cognitivefeatures. It also provides a more accurate and effective design basis and evaluation criteria for the protection and renewal of traditional settlements. Moreover, it hasguiding significance for the protection and development of traditional settlement andthe design of modern urban spatial form. |
