As continuing development of human society and the nonrenewable energysources became more and more dry up, energy saving and environment protection hasbecame the key eyes in international society. Though the ship sailing has moreefficiency on environment protection, comparing to other transportation ways. But thegreen house gas emissions caused by ship sailing can not be omitted, due to the fact thatship transportation capacity became giant, the ships are larger and the ship power isincreasing all time.Since Dec.1998, the42thMEPC meeting raised the problem of controllingemission of GHG. On2003, IMO started to organize new regulations of controlling ofGHG emission, delegated by UNFCCC. On Otc.2008, the58th MEPC Meetingchanged the name of ‘CO2Design Index’ to EEDI, and ‘CO2Operating Index’ to EEOI.On Mar.2010, the60thMEPC Meeting discussed the topic ‘suggestions to amendmentsto MARPOL Annex VI’ and in which contained ‘Ship Energy Efficiency ManagementPlan-SEEMP’. On July2011, the62ndMEPC Meeting the EEDI and SEEMPregulations has been agreed by amendments to MARPOL Annex VI, and willmandatory enter into force on Jan1st2013. This will be the first regulations ofcontrolling GHG emissions for marine industry in history. This law will effectivelycontrol the GHG emissions in next decade in world shipping industry.This article will firstly introduce the austerity situation of GHG emissions in world,and generally introduce all the efforts that the ship industry has made in order to controlthe GHG emissions. The formula of EEDI is being introduced in very details, and thefactors which might affect calculation value of EEDI. Moreover this article select a realship to perform case study, in the process we will know how to calculate EEDI, how toverify EEDI conformity. And the last several improvement methods to get lower EEDIvalue are explained. In this article, four main ship types in the market have beenselected to made regression research base on several database, the results have beencompared with IMO published. At the end of thesis, the defects of current EEDIformula have been raised up.
