Today’s Chinese elderly are living longer with the continuous improvement ofpeople’s living standards and medical technology development. China had to faceserious social problems which bringing with population. As a new pensionsettlement pattern, residences for elders have been gradually accepted by the peopleof China. However, there are still many shortcomings in the old apartment to today.The Chinese architect must be faced that how to make older people comfortableliving in apartments for the elderly and how to encourage older people exchangesthrough the organization of architectural space.The first chapter of this article is an introduction discussing on the trend of the agingworld population and the grim situation of aging population of China. This chapteralso discusses on significance of the development of apartments for the elderly inChina and discusses the significance of research and methods.The second chapter of this article analyzes some developed countries just like theU.S., Europe and Japan the development of apartments for the elderly. The analysisof these success stories can propose guiding opinions to the development ofapartments for the elderly. This chapter also analyzes and summarizes problems andshortcomings of today’s Chinese society apartments for the elderly.The third chapter discusses on the methods of the behavior of elders and thecommunication space.The forth chapter analyzes and summarizes the physiological and psychologicalcharacteristics of the elderly. This chapter also analyzes and summarizes theactivities within the different characteristics of elderly in the different space; inparticular expand exchanges behavioral characteristics. Combines with the fourthchapter, the fifth chapter proposes principles and recommendations for improvingthe design with the characteristics of the elderly in the private space, semi-privatespace and open space. The sixth chapter is the investigation of the Tianjinrepresentative three apartments for the elderly, focusing on analysis of theapartments for the elderly within the communication space utilization andinadequacies. Combines with the above theoretical study and practical, the seventhchapter proposes the design principles and design strategies for the communicationspace. Finely is the summarization of this paper and some suggestions of the constructionof the apartments for the elderly. I hope to give some inspiration to the constructionof the apartments for the elderly in the future. I wish I can help to solve the problemsof the residence of elders.
