Research On Early Modern Architecture Culture In Jiangsu Province

The dissertation for the Doctoral Degree belongs to the phased product of the study program authorised by the Cultural Bureau of Jiangsu Province.The study's scope in the dissertation focus on the architectural achievements in the early modern time. The choice of architectural types has been laid on different emphasis because of the imbalance development between cities of Jiangsu.Based on the investigation of all the city buildings, Chapter one describes briefly the development of early modern architecture in Jiangsu Province in order to supply a history background for the following chapters.Chapter two discusses the economic factor which was one of the most important characters in early modern time. Under economic influence, military industrial architecture in Nanjing, civil industrial architecture in Wuxi, municipal industrial architecture in Changzhou and public architecture built along Yangtse Rive in Zhenjiang, commerce streets in Lianyungang, city emporium in Nanjing and so on were chosen as the examples to explain the economic effect. At the same time, traffic and postal architecture had also been mentioned.Chapter three explains the political factor which had done decisive power in the development of Jiangsu early modern architecture. The typical examples are new administrative architecture in Nanjing and self-government in Nantong. In addition, the first new-type group architects'influences are mentioned.Chapter four explains the culture of interweavement of new and old and interweavement of east and west which were the most important characters in early modern time too. Western religion architecture, new-style school and hospital and other new-style cultural architecture were discussed to revel the western culture influence and at the same time the direction of creating Chinese spirit architecture.Chapter five discusses social living contents, which influenced architecture. Residence and hotel architecture were taken as the typical architecture types to elucidate the changes happened in city life.Chapter six concludes some styles of early modern architecture in Jiangsu Province.Chapter seven analyses the technique details behind in building material and conformation and the combination with architectural technique and form. The building was analyzed as parts to revel the relationship between technique and culture.Those subjects are coincident with economic, politics, culture and technique which determined the whole development of the city including architectural development. Those theoretical subjects were taken as the longitude and the examples of city building were added as the woof to create the whole network of this dissertation.Chapter eight relates to the protection and reuse of the early modern architecture. It mainly discussed the evaluate standards, policy of protection and the techniques, which aimed at protecting early modern architecture in Jiangsu Province.The dissertation is near 180 thousand Chinese words, with about 340 illustrations.
