With the rapid development of national economy, the demands for freight transport increase enormously align with the economic growth. Transportation of coal. steel and other mass goods transport rely more on railway transportation. However, freight transportation demands grow, but the capacity of railway freight transportation becomes tenser. Due to the lagging growing on railway freight transportation as well as unbalanced regional economic development, the contradiction between the railway traffic and transport capacity are gradually intensified. An urgent issue appears is that enhancing the efficiency of railway transportation. So far, to build heavy haul with large capacity and stringent specification, and tap into current traffic potential are the most proven methods. It is necessary to take into account the different rate and class of passenger train and freight train at the same time, because the current main railway transportation channel in China is a model of mixed passenger and freight lines, which raise another question, there are significant differences on technical requirements and transportation organization between passenger and freight trains. Against this background. this article achieved the aim of releasing full transport capacity on current lines which could provide important reference that could help traffic department to lay down transport planning reasonably, by studying on conditions to build heavy haul on current lines, transportation organization methods, train operation quantity optimization scheme and other key technologies.This article first clarified the meaning of Heavy-haul transportation, analyzed the organization and condition, and also explained operation principle Heavy-haul transportation Then it discussed the conditions of opening heavy-haul trains on current lines from line conditions, station equipment, train traction weight, railway vehicles and other influences. It built a optimization model of train operation quantity on current lines as well as satisfied the passenger demands through analyzing the calculation methods of annual freight volumes, train headway and traffic ability on current lines, also integrated the method of target planning.At last. this article took fengsha line which would open heavy-haul train as example, introduced the profile and main technology criterion of fengsha line, either analyzed the situation of transportation organization. Then, it used three Exponential Smoothing model to forecast short and long-term freight volume of fengsha line. Basined on the predicted freight volume and combined on-site data and the main technical criteria of fengsha line, it calculated and analyzed the number of heavy haul that need to be opened in long-term on fengsha line heavy haul direction through the optimization model of train operation quantity solved by LINGO. At last, it compared the solved various train operation quantity scheme from average daily traffic volume, capacity occupation, vehicles application and the number of locomotive needed to determine the optimization plan of train operation quantity on fengsha lines.
