Crane is a machine used for lifting, transportation, handling and installation. It can lift something that man can’t do it, it alleviates man’s physical labor and improves production efficiency, so it has been widely used in many fields.Boom is the main bearing frame of the crane, the strength of the boom determines the maximum lifting weight. So the boom structure design will directly affect the performance and the cost of the whole machine, the weight of the whole machine, height of gravity center for machine and machine stability. In ensuring the boom design safety, reduce the weight of boom, not only reduce weight of the whole machine, saving raw materials, but also can reduce the load on the machine and the cost of the frame, increase the flexibility and the crane lifting ability. It has great practical significance to improve the machine quality and economy.On the basis of GB/T 3811-2008 "crane design criterion" about load, strength calculation, mainly analyze the section area, the position of center of figure, moment of inertia and flexural modulus for the typical section of the boom:rectangular, hexagonal, eight shape, and the "U" shaped section, combined with the example about the 50 ton class telescopic boom of crawler crane of Hefei what Group Co. Ltd., compared and analyzed with numerical analysis method and finite element analysis methods, summarized the influence of all kinds of section shape of the boom.Conclusion:with the increase in the number of edges of the boom frame section, the area of the boom section, the section moment of inertia and flexural modulus decreased. Compared the other sections with the quadrilateral section. About the area, the hexagon section, the octagon section and the "U" shaped section reduced 5.5%,6.5%,7.2%; About the Y axis moment of inertia, the Hexagon section, the octagon section and the "U" shaped section reduced 13%,15.1%,16.7%; About the Z axis moment of inertia, the Hexagon section, the octagon section and the "U" shaped section reduced 11.4%,13.1%,14.3%. In the example, compare the octagon section boom and the "U" shaped section boom with the the Hexagon section boom the weight reduced 4%,6.5%, the boom stress distribution is more uniform, the material utilization rate is higher.
