It turns out that social management will be more and more informationalized and intelligentized. As the matter stands, traffic is such increasingly complex that there is great necessity to combine traffic development with modern information technology and scientific and technical payoffs to cope with increasing demand for traffic management in an informational and intelligent way. GIS is a powerful platform for information aggregation and data analysis, well 3DGIS has not only perfect spatial data structure and data model but also powerful ability for visualization and multidimensional spatial analysis and can provide industry with more scientific, more powerful three-dimensional space information services and decision support. With the development of three dimensional geographic information system (3DGIS), management associated with the geographic information presents an increasingly trend of multidimensional development, and traffic management with 3DGIS is a new direction for the application of GIS, which will lead an unprecedented change of transportation industry. Modeling of urban road facilities, construction of database and research of management system for urban roads based on the database is carried out in this paper, which can provide technical reference and support for the construction of a more comprehensive geographic information system for urban traffic.This paper first studies the quick method of three-dimensional modeling of urban roads, including road surface modeling, street furniture modeling and modeling of buildings along the roads, etc.. Secondly, a Geodatabase is established for the storage of space information of urban roads so that visualization of result, analytical applications and thematic information management with the management system of urban roads could be carried out latterly. Thirdly, with VS2010 as the integrated development environment and ArcGIS Engine developer kit as the secondary development component, a management system of urban roads is developed, realizing functions about view action, query statistics and three-dimensional analysis and so on. As a beneficial exploration of 3DGIS for transportation, this development offers a new practical and technical approach for application of 3DGIS in transportation industry.
