Guangzhou as the main financial, economic and shipping center in South China, the problem of traffic congestion has not only affected the daily production life of the people, the more restricted the development of social economy, has become a difficult problem to be urgently solved.In this article, by nature, types, characteristics, harm and the current status of the summary and analysis of the problem of traffic congestion in large and medium-sized cities in China,combined with the basic situation of road traffic in Guangzhou City, analyzes the causes of traffic congestion in Guangzhou city from three aspects of urban planning, traffic contradiction of supply and demand, the development of public transport, to explore solutions to these problems the train of thought.According to the basic situation of Guangzhou city road traffic and public transport priority development strategy, combined with the measures and effects of Guangzhou city in recent years made in the development of urban public transportation aspects, verified the effectiveness of creating "transit metropolis" to solve the problem of traffic congestion, get 4 conclusions: at presen Guangzhou City traffic congestion problem is not ptimistic; trafficcongestion is caused by many reasons; urban construction should take thestrategy as the dominant strategy for public transit; bus priority strategy, build transit city.
