As an effective method to ease urban traffic congestion, reduce traffic emissions and improve the operational efficiency, coordinated control is widely used. However, due to the ignorance of the influence of phase scheme design on the bidirectional green wave and other reasons, many coordinated control methods are not suiTab. for engineering practice. In this paper, we do the research of bidirectional green wave based on coordination control methods suiTab. for engineering practice.Firstly, the existed researches of the determination method of designed flow rate, the method to restore traffic demand, the coordinated control method of main road have been introduced. Then an improved method for coordinated control suiTab. for engineering practice is put forward.Further analysis will be done from the three aspects above:The designed flow rate is the basis of signal timing. Two new determination methods are proposed based on the studies of volume characteristics. The method which is most suiTab. for engineering practice is established after the simulations with VISSIM and CROSSIG.Due to the influence of bottlenecks, the volume got from traffic survey may not be the actual demand. Given to the volume characteristics, we developed a method to restore the traffic demand of the traffic network.On the basis of the laws of the car’s movement, we study the coordinated control methods of adjacent split midblock crosswalks and three-leg intersections with optimization models:with integer nonlinear programming method, an optimization model to minimize the maximum time of pedestrian crossing and an optimization model to maximize the bandwidth efficiency of the secondary direction are proposed. The basic restrict conditions consist the full analysis of the rules of single intersection signal timing and that the bandwidth efficiency of the main direction is bigger than that of the secondary direction. Case studies indicate that the models have great practicability and validity.
