With the development of our social economy and the popularization of cars, children’s car safety problem has become increasingly prominent. The main reason is due to the current car’s safety equipment and emergency measures are designed in accordance to adult body size that is not suitable for children’s physical specifications. As a result, Child occupant safety will be threatened when the car collision or emergency braking. Experimental results show that the use of child restraint system can effectively reduce the risk of child occupant hurt in the traffic accident. From the rules of development of the other congeneric products in the world: Child restraint system will be popular in China and this is an inevitable trend. But with the changes of living environment and lifestyles, people’s demands are changing. How to effectively obtain the user needs of the child restraint system, and apply it to the product design, has become the core issue of the industrial development.Product innovation design methodology is key point of product design reaearch. This paper attemps to integrate modern design methods and explore an effective product design innovative model of principles that meet the users’ needs. Moreover, as child restraint system design an example, describes the methodology applied process and comfirms the validity of the methodlogy. The paper takes the social status that the safety problem of children traveling by car as the background and takes the consumer and user demands as the starting point of design. The method includes user interviews, observation and questionnaire investigation etc. Then it researches and analysis the dominant demand and potential demand of users, collects and analysis the data of existing congeneric products, then analysis the user perception cognition for the differences and characteristics in colors and appearances. Finally, this paper practices the design of child restraint system with the help of theoretical research on design aesthetics, ergonomics, children’s pathology, consumer psychology, and product semantics to find out the design scheme of child safety seat that meet user’s physiological and psychological demands.
