Tower cranes are widely used in the construction of high-rise building, while there are still many tower cranes have accidents, which are much harmful to people’s life and property., so it is necessary to analyze and evaluate the reliability about the operation of tower cranes. fem simulation analysis can effectively reduce the cost and shorten the designing time, therefore it is widely used in engineering. This paper shows us the basic theory of finite element and ANSYS software,, by which we can analyze the structure strength, stiffness and buckling stability, seismic response and fatigue life of Model QTZ63 (5510) tower crane,. It also evaluated the safety and reliability of Model QTZ63. based on the result,we can improve the design and it also can provide reference of reliability to the similar mechanical equipment. The main contents are as follows:(1) Finite element model of tower cranes were established. The structure of tower cranes were simplified, and geometric modeling was established by the ways of bottom-up by using Design Modeler of ANSYS Workbench.then the profile steel of solid structure was shelled, and the imitation was made by using shell element. Then provide the model with elements type, material properties, the connecting unit processing and meshing, to generate finite element model of tower cranes.(2) Six kinds of typical working condition of statics of tower cranes were analyzed, and the stress nephogram and displacement nephogram of the tower cranes were obtained. Based on this result,we could get the maximum stress and deflection, we also could check the stiffness and strength of the tower cranes and find them to meet the design requirements while there was some material left. This provided suggestions for the improvement on the design of tower cranes.(3) Based on theory of linear fatigue cumulative damage, the fatigue life of tower crane was analyzed by using ANSYS nCode under ANSYS Workbench environment, according to different conditions in the actual proportion, the conclusion proved that the fatigue life of tower crane meets the design requirements. The linear buckling was analyzed, and the results were obtained, and the structure was discussed.(4) The earthquake response spectrum were analyzed. Through modal analysis, top 25 intrinsic frequencies and various mode of vibration mode were worked out. On the basis of the modal analysis and seismic spectrum, according to the model of three axis direction, whole coordinates X, Y, Z, for excitation source, three directions deformation nephogram and stress nephogram were get, which can draw a conclusion that fracture or damage of the tower cranes will not occur under magnitude 7 earthquake in class I site.At the end, the shortcomings of this paper were analyzed.
