In the past twenty years, the mileage of China’s freeway increasing continuously, the freeway transportation has become one of the pillars of the national economy. Yet, at the same time, the traffic accident in the freeway is also increasing continuously, and has caused huge losses to the country and the people. This makes freeway become a double-edged sword, it has its " advantage " and "disadvantage". So, how to make good use of the sword and to reduce the "disadvantage" to a minimum, this problem is needed to solve urgently. So we should give a scientific, comprehensive and systematic analysis to the causes of frequent accidents, carry out safety evaluation to freeway traffic, and put forward corresponding engineering measures, in order to reduce traffic accidents or reduce traffic accident damaged degree. These researches which relate to traffic safety are imminent.Firstly, systematic, comprehensive view has been taken in this paper to analyze the factors and interactions of these factors which influence the freeway traffic safety by people, vehicle, road and environment, put forward the safety evaluation index system of freeway traffic around the "people-vehicle-road-environment" system, and get the weight of each evaluation index by using the analytic hierarchy process.Secondly, based on the idea of the attributes of highway traffic safety evaluation to the issue of "to give quantitative study for the qualitative description of things", the attribute overall evaluation model has been introduced. We can identify attribute of the model after determining the single index measure value, synthetic attribute measure value and select the degree of confidence, then the evaluation results can be obtained.Then, the model is applied to traffic safety evaluation in freeway of Hubei Xianning section of Beijing to Hong Kong and Macao, and compares the evaluation with the actual results of traffic condition of this section, in order to test the rationality of the model.Finally, according to the safety evaluation results of highway traffic, the traffic safety engineering measures can be put forward correspondingly.
