The automatic clutch actuator of the commercial vehicles mainly uses electronically controlled pneumatic. However, the gas is compressible and it is easy to be irritable. What’s more, the other problem such as the nonlinearity and hysteresis and so on. Those exist in the both the disengagement and engagement processes of the clutch, which has increased the control complexity and affected the accuracy and joint flexibility of the automatic clutch control, the shift quality will also be affected. In order to solve the above problems, a new gas-electricity double-acting clutch actuator is designed in this paper based on the traditional EPS gearshift system. The proposed clutch actuator can be applied to the performing operating system of the automatic clutch on the buses or the heavy commercial vehicles. The development status at home and abroad about the AMT technique and the automatic clutch are analyzed in the beginning, and the different driving control mode of the automatic clutch actuator and its advantages and disadvantages are also discussed. Then the control law of clutch engagement is introduced, and the selection of the control variables is analyzed as well. Finally, the scheme design of the control system is proposed. In the scheme design, the mechanical structure of the automatic clutch actuator is designed in the first, and both the working principle of the system and the selection of the important components are also introduced. Then, the control scheme of the automatic clutch actuator, in which the modular design method is used, is designed. Both the hardware circuit part and the software control part are introduced in detail. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed automatic clutch actuator is verified through the tests using a built test bed, which has established a good foundation for the traditional EPS system upgrading to the AMT automatic transmission and be used commercially.
