The mining industry is an important industry and key economic factor in many countries, including China. The mining industry has undergone hundreds of years since the industrialrevolution. But with the gradual depletion of mineral resources, many disastrous abandonedmine lands are left. Then the mining production ability and aesthetic value are broken, at thesame time, the structure and function of the ecosystem are serious degradation. There are a lotof abandoned mine lands problems around the world, besides the abandoned lands andequipment, bleak environment and impoverished communities occur in almost every miningarea. These abandoned mine lands are double-edged sword for the local social development, ifthey can be effectively improved, they can not only repair the ecological network and spatialtexture, but also improve the efficiency of land use and value, and activation of the depressedspace, then promote the healthy and orderly development of society. Therefore, manycountries have taken positive attitude to the abandoned mine lands, hope making them becomenew driving force for social development through the ecological restoration and landscapetransformation.Under the background of current increasingly tense land resource, serious ecologicalpollution and industry transformation, China has taken some administrative measures toalleviate it, such as control the number and scale of mining area, and study in-depth andconstantly on ecological restoration engineering technology. Based on that, the criticalquestion is how to use landscape planning to finish ecological restoration, then change "waste"into "treasure". This is an important issue concerned by domestic and foreign experts, it notonly relates to the coordination of mining industry development and environmental protection, but also the improvement of the mining environment, mining confidence and the quality of life, and eventually the promotion of social harmony and progress. The ecological restoration of abandoned mining lands is a broad and long process, it needsmany professional groups contributing their professional knowledge and ability. The relevantprofessional experts include biologists, ecologists, mining engineers, civil engineers, landscape architectures, environmental engineers and so on. If landscape planning is one part of the process of ecological restoration from the beginning, what different of ecologicalrestoration processes and outcomes would be? With these thoughts, this paper mainlydiscusses the key role of landscape planning in ecological restoration process of abandonedmine lands. This paper is based on a lot of references. First, the type and characteristics of abandonedmine lands and basic theory of the ecological restoration and landscape planning areintroduced. Then analyzing and summarizing some representative success cases aboutecological restoration and landscape planning of abandoned mine lands from multipleperspectives. After that, putting forward landscape planning strategies of abandoned minelands based on ecological restoration, and taking Nanjing Mufu mountain park landscapeplanning as an example, in order to demonstrate combining theory with practice. Hope thiscould be certain theoretical guidance and practical significance for the comprehensivemanagement of abandoned mine lands in China.
