With the energy sources dwindled and the rapid development of thermal power industry, saving energy and reducing consumption to coal power unit become very important. Energy loss-analysis, the theoretical basis to guide the operation optimization of thermal power plant, reflects the affection of the deviation of the operating parameters and their optimum situations in the coal consumption. It helps the operator make targeted adjustments to thermal power units and achieve optimal operation of thermal power units.This paper introduces the basic method of energy loss-analysis, which is essentially a heat economy calculation. It can be calculated from the "first law of thermodynamics" and the "second law of thermodynamics", then describes the current development status and problems of energy loss-analysis system. In the basic theory, to determine the coal consumption type of loss-analysis by analyzing and comparing the coal consumption of thermal power plant. And then elaborates energy loss-analysis is reasonable from the perspective of basic mathematical principles. And on this basic, establish the calculation models of coal consumption loss, including boiler thermal deviation model which gives the calculation of the coal consumption loss generated by the parameter variation and the model of the thermodynamic system based on cyclical function method combined with matrix expression. Target calculation is the premise of loss analysis, and only after determining reasonable target, then can get accurate results of consumption loss. The paper proposes different methods to determine the target of different operating parameters, due to the different characteristics of various operating parameters.On the basis of the calculation model of loss-analysis and the methods of determining target of parameters, choosing a power plant unit as an example to prove that the energy loss-analysis model established is useful and accurate. Finally, this paper develops a software system to the energy loss-analysis of thermal power plant through using C++ Builder, SQL Server 2005 database and Matlab, which can calculate and analyze the coal consumption loss generated by the deviation of operating parameters, guiding the optimal operation to thermal power unit.
