Research On Protection And Renovation Of Wen Chang Eighteen Lines Comb Type Settlement

"Comb type" settlement is the main traditional settlement type of northern area of Hainan and also the basic of Chinese rural social structure. It is very important that we should further study on the both the history and the future of it. This paper takes the largest settlement-Wenchang eighteen lines with longest history in Hainan area as the research object. In this paper, I elaborate the spatial pattern, history, culture and environment of the eighteen lines from the city planning, spatial characteristics and protection of cultural heritage and some other aspects systematically. I hope that can get the rule of Hainan traditional settlement so I can try to propose some suggestions about the protection and renovation settlements and as a good sample for the protection and renovation of other "Comb type" settlements.There are three parts in the paper:the first part of the paper is mainly to explain the reasons, meaning and the research contents of the this paper and try to analyze some related concepts and theories;The second part is mainly about the research based on the related concepts including the texture context, external boundary, lane pattern and so on. Based on these data, I try to analyze the traditional settlement with its’rules and some changes. And at the same time, I also analyze the history, religions institution, folk taboos and so on and try to work out with the relationship of the material culture and nonmaterial culture.The third part of the paper is some detail analysis for some points of the second part like the status of spatial pattern and the buildings. From the analysis of the trend and the problems of the settlement, try to come up with the protection and renovation strategy for the traditional "Comb type" settlement.
