Research On Evaluation And Control Methods Of Urban Skyline

Urban skyline is the epitome of a city’s landscape feature and cultural connotation, it also embodies the city image in the most visual way. As regional culture and historical course differs, urban skyline in different cities often presents unique features. The appealing features of urban skyline have become one of the reasons for people to gather around, work, reside and travel in the cities. To a certain extent, it improves the cohesiveness and comprehensive strength of a city.As urbanization process accelerates, cities are vigorously promoting the construction of new towns and new districts, urban skyline begins to extend and its commanding height also transfer from old town to new town. However, many new towns are constructed in a hurry and in mass production, and the input into the shaping of spatial levels is insufficient. As a result, skyline in these new towns is far from stereoscopic, lacking of reasonable layout and cultural connotation, and detached from old town and the natural environment. Lakeshore New District is a comprehensive key development area of Hefei City. In the past eight years, outstanding achievements have been made during the construction process. Nevertheless, the district is also constructed in a hurry, and many issues exist in the spatial quality and skyline landscape.On the basis of a thorough research on documentations about urban skyline, this paper summarizes the subject and object elements that influence urban skyline as well as common evaluation methods and evaluation system on urban skyline, for the purpose of guiding actual evaluation on urban skyline in the next step. Currently, there is no agreed international evaluation criterion on urban skyline. This paper attempts to use a combined qualitative and quantitative evaluation method and extract measurable evaluation factors, on which an evaluation system on urban skyline can be built. Since the factor is measurable and easy to compare and analyze, this system can be applied to all types of cities. After research, the evaluation criterion and evaluation system can be applied to the actual evaluation and analysis on the skyline of Lakeshore New District in Hefei.Meanwhile, by analyzing the applicable condition and measuring the advantages and disadvantages of different types of cities’methods on controlling urban skyline and their strategies of management implementation that concluded from previous experiences, combining with current issues, rational suggestions can be made to the skyline control of Lakeshore New District, both currently and in the future. Hopefully, this paper can provide a case reference for the construction development and relative research work of Lakeshore in the future.
