The harbor portal crane with complex structure; it works in the open air with corrosion condition. With heavy workload and long-term, its working environment is very bad. Most of the cranes have been used for more than ten years, and this equipment frequently generated accidents resulted from many factors like the design, manufacture, and durable years, which have a great potential safety hazard for the harbor normal operation. Regarded the harbor portal crane as a research object, this paper analyzes typical failure modes, failure causes and failure effects of the types of cranes, then puts forward the corresponding control measures, which is to say using the risk priority number sorting to determine the key crane structure and the dominant failure mode. Finally taking the maintenance decision-making program of MQ40- 37 harbor portal crane as an example, this paper verifies the feasibility of the control measures, which provides references of maintenance management plans for port enterprises. In this paper, the main works done are as follows:(1) Through a large number of literature retrieval and research for port enterprise, this paper introduces the current development of port crane and research present situation of FMEA, and puts forward the necessity of FMEA application research. The partition method of harbor portal crane system is studied, and the whole system of the harbor portal crane is divided into four subsystems by the hybrid classification methods. Then main structures and functions are introduced in this paper.(2) The fault pattern recognition method is researched, namely using the engineering simulation and fault statistics to obtain typical failure modes and their treatment measures of metal structure, working mechanism, electrical system and safety protection device. With the help of ANSYS finite element simulation analysis method, this paper focuses on statics simulation analysis of metal structures of MQ40-37 harbor portal crane. Through the establishment of the relationship between statics analysis results and FMEA, the faults and their reasons of metal structures of harbor portal crane are accurately obtained.(3) By the establishments of severe degree grade standards of fault modes, failure probabilities, and difficulty levels of fault detects. FMEA analysis like Metal structure, working mechanism, electrical control and safety protection device of MQ40-37 harbor portal crane are finished. In view of the high risk priority number of failure mode is analyzed, and control measures are put forward.(4) According to synthesis sorting and transverse sorting of RPN value of the failure mode, this paper determines the dominant failure modes and key components of harbor portal crane, and monitors the dominant failure modes of MQ40-37 harbor portal crane on a port to determine the place of routing inspection and inspection period.
