Xi’an is a world famous ancient capital of culture. Through the construction and development of several thousand years past and present, the internal network of Ming City Wall area has to a large extent also preserve the unique ancient Chinese relatively structured checkerboard layout. Ming City Wall area has been playing the economic, cultural and administrative center of the city, it produces and attracted a large number of transportation. With the speeding up of urban motorization, its internal traffic has overwhelmed. Ming City Wall area is a representative of the traditional urban space of China, gathered a large number of historical and cultural relics. With high historical and cultural value, it must be protected and heritage in transportation construction and development. In order to meet current and future traffic demand, we should develop a mode of transportation to appropriate its specific spatial pattern, which is slow mode transportation.Firstly, this paper reviewed on the development of slow mode transportation, summarized the successful experience of typical city that develop slow mode transportation. This paper also analyzed the basic characteristic of slow mode transportation, including slow mode transportation itself characteristic, and the purpose properties, the distance properties, using the data to fitting to obtain the reasonable threshold of slow mode transportation in Xi’an and development orientation of slow mode transportation in the Ming City Wall area.Secondly, this paper analyzed the regional contest and historical, cultural characteristics and the development of conservation process of Ming City Wall area to propose historical and cultural value and protection course. It discussed the necessity and feasibility of establishing slow mode traffic system in Ming City Wall area depends on analyzing and evaluation of the road network conditions, traffic conditions and the slow mode traffic current development conditions in this area.Starting with the perspective of the protection of historical monuments in Ming City Wall area, this paper established a slow mode traffic system mode by analyzing the space form elements of slow mode traffic system. Finally, this paper designed a independent slow traffic system in Ming City Wall area. Aim at this system, some specific traffic organization and measures are put forward to seek continuity and security of the system. Trough developing a traffic mode that appropriate regional characteristics, it hopes that helpful to relieving the traffic situation in the area and protecting its historical and cultural value.
