Travel behavior research is the basis of transport planning and transport policy-making. As an important part of urban commuter traffic, the travel of primary and middle school students(to and from school) has an important influence on urban traffic congestion and traffic conflicts. The study of students’ travel behaviors helps us understand congestion characteristics and propose corresponding strategies better.During the travel of students to and from school, some students was accompanied by family members to travel, so the influence factor of students’ travel mode selection are often more complicated than independent travel group. Family members’ travel modes and students’ travel modes are interrelated, so the research of student travel should take other family members’ travel mode into account. This paper is focusing on the students’ travel mode choice on the basis of parents’ different travel mode. After comparing the disaggregate models and its characteristics, this paper use Heckman model to study students’ travel mode. The results of the Heckman models on student’ mode is conditional upon parents’ mode to work, the Heckman Probit model includes an election equation and an outcome equation. The binary dependent variable in the selection equation is a travel mode used by a parent, whereas the binary dependent variable in the outcome equation is a travel mode used by a student in the household. In order to study whether parents’ different travel mode to work affect students’ mode to school, parents’ mode to work is divided into cares, buses, electric cars, walking and cycling. The model results were obtained by the heckprob command in stata, we analyzed the interaction between parents’ travel modes and students’ travel modes, as well as the influence of their personal attributes, household characteristics and trip characteristics to modes choice. Finally, combining the model results analysis and sensitivity analysis, the paper put forward students demand management strategies to alleviate the city traffic congestion.
