In the development of the substation automatic, the important part of the automation system, relay constantly engaged in innovation. Since the rise of electronic transformers, the development of computer network communication technology and the popularize of IEC61850 communication standard driving the relay evolution toward digital direction. As the vital part, the digital intelligent relay test should keep up with the development too.The last stage, on testing technology for intelligent substation protection devices, testers gradually become a hot research. But for various reasons, it shows the current study is not comprehensive enough, nor deep. Precisely because of this, this article is based on the characteristics of intelligent substation protection device and the current situation, from research of the state grid’s "six unified" standards, IEC 61850 communication protocol and automated test, proposed improvement plan and carried out the appropriate verification.This article is concerned on the implementation of digital testing device for relays based on the IEC 61850 standard.At the beginning,it focus on the history and evolution of substation automation system.And then refers to the creation of IEC 61850. Also, the features and communication principle of IEC 61850. It follows a discussion about the principle of sampling values’ service regulated by IEC61850-9-2.Correspondently, the principle of GOOSE are also of great concentrations, also Introduced tester architecture.After studied the principle of the tester, The fundamental design and requirement is proposed. Through learning the intelligent station relay tester, I compared the differences between different testers during the test.The latter part of the article describes the relay tester auto-configuration method based on state grid’ “six unified” standards.It returned to practice in the end, tested the tester from the perspective of workers on-site. And it ended up well, demonstrated the feasibility of automated relay tester.
