The volume of the traffic and the axial load distribution of asphalt pavement for arterial highway under heavy load distribution are surveyed, showing that the overloading of the trucks on the pavement have caused severe damages to its structure.By checking the pavement structure, the structure of the time-honored asphalt pavement for arterial highway under heavy load has a weaker capability to bear, its damages are larger than the highways constructed recently. Therefore, a large-scale overhaul and maintenance is urgently needed.Firstly, based on the Shakedown Theory, in this dissertation the design indexes of the pavement overhaul structure is defined, and finite element model is built to simulate the work conditions of the overhaul structure of the asphalt pavement under the overloading vehicles. By comparing the different changes of the road multipliers while the alternative design indexes were settled in its limits, the deflection,semi-rigid structure layer bottom stress and rutting are screened as the design indexes of the pavement overhaul structure for the asphalt pavement for arterial highway.Secondly, the overhaul structure of the pavement is classified into functional overhaul, structural overhaul and reconstruction of pavement structure in accordance with the layer of the pavement structure overhaul and the corresponding typical structure is put forward. By analyzing the influence of the design parameters of the overhaul structure on the selected design indexes, it is found that the key factors affecting the design indexes are different, deflection indicators are primarily affected by its following layer parameters, the tensile stress indicator are closely related to the semi-rigid material parameter. The rutting indicators are the results of the comprehensive effects of all design indexes.Finaly, the maximum axle load for the typical overhaul structure of the pavement is put forward based on the design indexes. By applying the optimization of the response surface, the typical overhaul structure has been optimized in a full life circle and the total expenditure of the whole life circle of the road maintenance project is evaluated. Besides, the objective function is established under the minimum cost of the whole life circle and the cost optimization model is adopted to get the best overhaul plan.
