Industrial Heritage Conservation And Reuse Of Hohhot Steel Plant

Hohhot steel plants in 1958, is a medium-sized backbone iron and steel enterprise in Inner Mongolia. The development history of this plant is an important part of the history of metallurgy in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. It has been experiencing five stages, establishment, dismount, recovery, development, bankruptcy, until asset impairment was finished in 2001.Although the steel plant did not exist for a long time, its appearance came to the end of the history in which Hohhot could not produce steel. And the development of it made important contributions to promoting economic growth and revitalizing national industry in Inner Mongolia. Through searching and sorting literature, field trips and interviewing and consulting experts, the development history and present situation of Hohhot steel is combed, and the feasibility of the model on the conservation and reuse of steel industrial heritage is explored in this paper. According to the current situations of Hohhot steel and the lessons drawn from the successful cases in terms of the domestic evaluation methods of the value of industrial heritage and industrial heritage conservation and reuse, the comprehensive reform model that the industrial museum is considered as the main body is put forward. Moreover the transformation and overall planning scheme of industrial park is expounded, and the design of industrial museum is presented. The main part of the paper contains four chapters.Chapter I: Introduction. The overview of industrial heritage research background, status and methods is presented. And the significance and purpose of Hohhot steel plant industrial heritage is studied.Chapter II: The survey on the development of Hohhot steel plant. The history and development of Hohhot steel industry heritage and the important role in the industrial development of Inner Mongolia is investigated. The basic research of steel industry heritage is conducted, which is mainly related to industrial heritage, the heritage surveys, the history and development of construction, the status and value and so on. Also, the site survey methodology and research methods on industrial heritage are summarized and discussed primarily.Chapter III: The industrial heritage evaluation of Hohhot steel plant. According to the actual situations and findings for Hohhot steel plant industrial heritage, the hierarchical model of Steel Industry Heritage worth assessment is set up. Based on the historical value, the value of science and technology, the social value, the economic value and the landscape value in environmental aspects, the qualitative and quantitative analysis and evaluation for Steel Industry Heritage is carried out to determine steel industry heritage conservation and reuse implementation scheme.Chapter IV: The conservation and reuse strategies of Hohhot steel plant industrial heritage. Through the design and experience from Liuzhou Industrial Museum and the transformation of the old Museum in Department of Architecture, Inner Mongolia University, multi-factors and field surveys, the compressive transformation mode that the Industrial Museum becomes the main part is identified with the focus on the main plant 650. Based on the spatial characteristics of the main plant 650, the internal is transformed into the pattern with both upper and lower levels. In the east, west, south sides are set three new entrances respectively, the old north entrance is used and eventually the transparent traffic pattern in four directions is formed. The original factories enclosed are divided by different functional areas, and transformed into a compressive site with the industrial heritage display, commercial, office and teaching.
