Electric power system is a comprehensive multidisciplinary science, and the electric field and magnetic filed mainly involved in its operating properties exhibit the features of multilevel correlation, nonlinear dynamics, randomness and real-time, etc., so electric power system simulation always plays an extremely important role in the development of the system. Currently, the electric power system simulation is divided into physical dynamic simulation, offline digital simulation and online digital simulation, which complement and support each other. Simulation can also be used in the feasibility study of electric power system projects, such as to predict future performance of the system and to find the possible bottleneck, to analyze fault conditions that actually occur to power grids effectively and take correct protection and restrictive measures, to optimize power grids and improve economy and reliability of system operation effectively.In physical dynamic simulation system of electric power system, generator governor is a very important factor affecting transient progress of the simulation model. Authenticity of the simulation system of the governors decides the authenticity of the whole simulation model, therefore, it is really meaningful to develop a simulation system of generator governors with superior performance as it will provide a real and reliable source for the simulation system and in further lay a good foundation for research of electric power system and test of relay protection products.Starting from the principles and criteria of simulation, this paper establishes a mathematical model of the simulation system of generator governors based on the theories in autocontrol and power electronic technology, considering the mathematical models of the governors of hydroturbines, steam turbines and prime motors, and by comparing the characteristics of DC motors that are actually used to drag simulation generators. Then, this paper sets up a PSCAD simulation model and a RTDS simulation model to verify the design principles of software, which lays a solid foundation for developing a simulation system device of generator governors on the UAPC platform. Based on double closed-loop deviating regulation of rotate speed and current, this device can simulate the characteristics of prototype unit governors, the self-balancing of prime motors and those of water and steam pipelines, showing perfect balance both statically and dynamically. Meanwhile, specifically to the actual demands in laboratory, the practical functions including low-frequency oscillation and step, etc. are added to make it possible to simulate prototype units of different characteristics and capacities by changing parameters of the device.
