With the rapid development of railway transportation industry in China, the line facilities technical standards, the braking performance of locomotive and vehicle, the artificial job specification and the operations organization which are original used as the basis of refuge siding seting and checking calculation have changed a lot. The existing norms cannot cover the new requirements which are proposed by the updating of the equipment and organizational means, and it also fails to take full account of the mate-relationship between refuge siding and driving equipment which is required by transportation organization work. On the other hand, due to the requirement of western development and exit channels construction, the construction scale of mountain railway in complex terrain conditions is expanding, the safety of mountain railway is the most important issue which should be considered in design. It is very essential to research on the necessity of refuge siding set. The traditional approaches are mainly graphical method, which takes a lot of labor and cannot ensure the necessary precision, it cannot meet the requirements of train line design automation. On the basis of train traction calculation theory, this paper develops a computing system which can calculate the necessity of refuge siding set, then uses the system to calculate the necessity of refuge siding set, and draws the conclusions.First, the paper introduces the applications of refuge siding at home and abroad, and overview the related research papers about refuge siding set and train traction calculation, which leads to research methods, content and applicability of the paper. The definition of runaway train is given on the basis of analyzing the causes of Yang put accidents, and the change of train subversion conditions is analyzed on the basis of analyzing the change of railway technology conditions.Second, On the basis of the train traction calculation theories such as stress analysis of Long Slope, execution policy and error impact analysis, etc, the mathematical mode of check calculation system is established, the working process of the system is determined, the system is developed and the database is designed.Third, the Secondary Brake, Some Brake Force Failure Method and the Successive Braking, the Braking Force Weakened Method in traditional Refuge Siding Design Specifications are used to check the setting of refuge siding. The defects of original check calculation approach are analyzed, and the new approach is proposed and used. The conclusions about the necessity of refuge siding setting in different slopes and three inspecting calculation approaches are drawn.Finally, the Ya’an to Xinduqiao segment in Sichuan-Tibet Railway is checked by using the calculation system, the relevant conclusions about the necessity of refuge siding setting are drawn.
