The traditional battery charger has a simple structure and a single charge method, which can not adjust the charging method according to the charge state of the battery and there is no function of monitoring, protection and restoration of the battery charging process. In recent years, with the improvement of digital signal processing technology, the cost of micro controller is increasing. Digital control of the battery charging system can achieve a variety of complex charging control method and enable the battery charging process to be monitored and displayed. It improves the flexibility of the system, highly improves the charging efficiency and prolongs the service life of the battery at the same time.This paper finished the research and design of intelligent charging system for automotive. The main research contents are as followings:(1) The paper analyzes the electrochemical principle, charge and discharge characteristics of lead-acid batteries, and the shortcomings of the current lead-acid battery charger and charging method, and points out the significance of the research and design of this paper.(2) According to the basic functions and technical requirements of the charging system, the overall structure of the charging system is designed. The circuit topology and the related circuit function modules are selected. The bridge rectifier filter circuit, half bridge converter, power switch and output rectifier filter circuit, PWM drive circuit, sampling circuit, protection circuit, man-machine interface circuit and auxiliary power circuit modules related to the design and relevant parameter calculation and component selection are accomplished.(3) The five stages charging control strategy is designed based on the analysis of the common charge method and the working principle of the battery.(4) According to the actual work demandes and characteristics of the charging system, the software structure of the charging system is designed according to the function of the system. Analysis and introduction of the main program, interrupt program, charging control strategy, charging procedures, charging termination procedures and other modules of the design.(5) Overall testing and result analysis of the charging system were maken and the summarizing of the work done and the perspective fields of the future research were finished in the end of the paper.
