Crossing behavior is fundamental to pedestrians. It accounts for a certain proportion in pedestrian traffic system. The previous traffic design, however, generally takes into consideration the operation of motor vehicles, while somewhat neglects the demands of pedestrians. Consequently, people on foot, when trying to cross the street, might have taken actions that breaks certain traffic rules. This kind of misconducts not only endangers pedestrians themselves, but also reduces the efficiency of traffic flow. When it comes to Signal intersection, the resulting influence would be especially serious. Therefore, the study in illegal crossing behavior of pedestrians, has always been an important part in urban traffic safety researches. Currently, the mentioned study mainly concentrates on observable indicators, while lacks the inspections on pedestrians themselves. This paper focused on the decision making process of pedestrians trying to cross the street, and analyzed the illegal behaviors from the pedestrians’points of view with structural equation modeling. This paper mainly covers the research contents following:First of all, this paper analyzed previous research achievements, summarized the factors in illegal behaviors of pedestrians crossing street in the signal intersection, which includes time factor、group factor、traffic flow、traffic facility factor and others. In the meantime, the illegal behaviors of pedestrians crossing street was defined.Second, this paper built the model for the pedestrian crossing traffic violations with the structural equation modeling in the signal intersection, and found the solution with maximum likelihood. Moreover, from the pedestrian’s point of view, this paper designed and conducted a questionnaire survey according to the structural equation model built. The questionnaires were then reclaimed, and the factors, as long as reliability and validity of sample data were analyzed in SPSS. Moreover, the paper solved the structural equation of the model with AMOS21.0. The model was then optimized by path analysis, model fitting and modifications. Consequently, the data shows that the fit indicator of the model was greater than positive, and this paper was able to discover the effects that different factors bring into the pedestrian crossing traffic violations. Specifically, the influence coefficients for time, traffic facility, traffic flow, group and other factors are 0.234,0.252,0.36,0.337 and 0.197 respectively. In addition, the sample was studied by group, and the characteristics of crossing traffic violations of different groups were then discussed. Finally, based on the study and conclusion, this paper proposed numbers of solutions in traffic design, safety education as well as traffic facility management. These proposals would be considerably effective in preventing and reducing pedestrian violation behavior in the signal intersection.
