Wuchang is a historical and cultural city with almost 2000 years history. There are mounts of excellent historical buildings scattered across the city that constituting an important section for both history protection and modern city life.The object of this paper is Tan Hualin historical streets in Wuhan. The author made an extensive study of the morphological changes especially in the scale of street district of Tanhualin district from 1861 untill now. Interpretation of the analysis of Tanhualin area forms, cultural characteristics, social differentiation etc. were used to explore how it form the city forms by the influence of nature, history, economic and cultdural power. Moreover the interactive relationship between changes of social space structure and transformation of city morphology is also discussed.There are three parts in this paper.The first chapter is introduction, mainly described concepts of urban morphology especially the Cozen approach. Information of social space structure for bridging the morphological change and the driving forces. Therefore research issues can be found.The second chapter is the analysis of Tan Hualin’s urban morphology from the historical map, as a basic framework for the following morphology period division.The four periods of Tan Hualin’s development is discussed in multi-dimension from Chapter three to Chapter six: the power of the church formative period from 1861 to 1926; marginal centralization expansion period from 1926 to 1953; transition constructive period from 1953 to 1978; from 1978 until now. In one hand, new changes of each period in respect of urban morphology basic factors were summed up, in the other hand, different driven force for the changes of each period concluding the factor of “people” by interviewing residents there were deeply analyzed as well.The seventh chapter as a conclusion refines the change of Tan Hualin’s urban morphology and the driving forces.In general, while the draws on the Cozen urban morphology research methods in this paper, social space structure were added to analysize as well which making up the neglect of Sociology application in traditional urban morphology research. The deep-level connection between the function alteration in historic quarter and surrounding circumstances is figured out by historical analysis the object within a bigger environment and considering the transformation processes, social space structure changing and driven motivation, in order to conservation that area as a whole not only the physical form.
