Packaging industry plays important part in the development process of China’s industrial. Packing box manufacturing, as an indispensable part in packaging industry, however, has come across various difficulties and hurdles in these years of rapid development. Due to the high customization level of packing box, the packing boxes are manufactured in small batch and multiple species. The assembly requires frequent replacement of product specifications. Considering the low-wage quality of the manual work as well as the high cost of the equipment, the assembly is usually dependent on manual work. With the rising wages and the increasingly fierce competition in market, the cost of packaging production process in personnel is also increasing gradually, resulting in a great obstacle in a lower production cost, an increase in profit space, as well as improvement in market share. Therefore, packaging manufacturing enterprises need a set of scientific and reasonable method to guide the assembly workshop of the personnel allocation, which can reduce the cost of human resources in assembly line and provide the criteria for the enterprise to design the salary system according to the capability of the workers. This paper will take the Dongguan packaging manufacturing industry as the research background, and proposes a resource optimization method in assembly line considering variability in the human capabilities.First of all, according to the survey of the packing box assembly production process of the enterprise, combined with relevant theoretical research about resource optimization of assembly production, this paper analyzes the influence factor of the cost of human resources distribution packaging box, and then the manual assembly resource allocation optimization problem is described, next, a mathematical model considering the difference in manual capability in assembly line resources of optimal allocation with the objective function to minimize the cost of human resource is constructed; secondly, a stepped-optimized algorithm, which is achieved by iterative compression in global optimizing space, is proposed. Then the compiling method to solve the mathematical model using LINGO software is introduced, combined with examples of packaging production to verify the correctness of the method. And then this paper analyzes the influence of the difference of the ability and the salary level on the resource allocation of the assembly line, which further illustrates the necessity of human resource allocation optimization and provides the basis for the enterprise to design the salary system. Finally, the robots are introduced to deal with the rising cost of personnel, and then the assembly production line is redistributed after that. The mathematical model to work out the cost of human resources has been adjusted, through the analysis of the changes of human resources cost structure and characteristics in reconstructed assembly production line. Finally, this paper analyzes the breakeven point of semi-automated assembly line where manual work is replaced by robots.
