There are thousands of small hydropower stations located in rural areas of China. These stations play a very import role in the development of rural areas. In recent years, most of them emerge in various problems due to being long neglected and lack of repair. Therefore, necessary reform must be carried on for them.Based on the author’s long term work and research experience in rural small hydropower automatic system, this paper focuses on analyzing and solving the problems of the small hydropower stations in order to help the people lived in rural areas. The main problems of the rural small hydropower stations include:low automation degree, low-level technical personnel, lack of staffs, concentrated ownership, and so on. Here, we propose an automatic solution to the reform of small power stations, and then analyze the solution in details, and make a conclution at the end of the paper. The content of the paper is organized as follows:1. Firstly, the current situation of rural small hydropower stations and existing problems are analyzed. The status of automatic system is also involved. It is more and more clear that the reform of rural small hydropower stations is urgent.2. Then, a reform route about rural small hydropower automatic system is put forward. It chooses centralized control operation mode, which is introduced at this part. Furthermore, the application of the rural small hydropower centralized control mode is described. The details of the reform process are also discussed.3. Finally, the comparison of different key equipments and schemes of the hydropower station automatic system is given. Based on that, we decideour solution, which is illustrated through a practical engineering case.
