| Dien Bien is a border mountainous province in the North-West of the country. It is the only province of Vietnam bordering with 02 countries, bordered by Yunnan-China to the north, Phongsali-Laos to the west. Dien Bien terrain is complex composed of mountains stretching along the Vietnam-Lao border to the west. Interspersed with high mountains are valleys, small, steep rivers and streams allocated across the province. Dien Bien is a collecting area and is a quite large cultural center with a unique geographical environment and distinctive cultural characteristics. For years, all ethnic groups in Dien Bien has built a traditional living culture and housing architecture rich in character and reserved under long history. Many research results show that traditional villages and residential culture of the ethnic groups in Dien Bien still exists till now.Traditional villages and houses of ethnic groups in Dien Bien in various forms, rich in content, both in culture and architecture building become a unique cultural space with great value in studying living space in the region. The diversity of Dien Bien in architecture is reflected in the layout of space and architectural style of the traditional house type, consistency and independence of each cultural system of building houses, dividing residential areas.Dien Bien belongs to northwest cultural sub-area, which includes the provinces of Lai Chau, Lao Cai, Son La, Yen Bai and a part of Hoa Binh. There are more than 20 ethnic groups intermingled with each other in Dien Bien, in which Thai people emerged as the shade representing Northwest culture. There is a strong cultural exchanges between ethnic groups, promoting the understandings between peoples in the region and in the area. Dien Bien culture is blended by Thai culture, Mon-Khmer culture, Miao Yao culture, Yue Meng culture, foreign culture and other cultures. It is a new regional culture, which has the continuous area and the same region features. As the developing of Dien Bien culture, Dien Bien traditional village and residential landscape has been through a process, and finally turn into Dien Bien local cultural landscape which is unipquely.This paper is based on the perspective of cultural geography to study the traditional villages and residents in Dien Bien, and the methods of cultural geographic research and analysis to describe the villages and residents. In this paper, the research content is divided into four small subjects:1. Building the Dien Bien region’s traditional village and residential cultural geography database and drawing cultural geography maps.2. The traditional village and residential culture areas in Dien Bien region.3. Evolution mechanism and analyzing the reasons about traditional village and residential culture in Dien Bien.Two important conclusions are sumed up in this research:1. the Dien Bien region’s traditional village and residential area, taking Thai people’s culture as center, is effected by multiple cultures, as Hmong, Khmer, creating a unique cultural characteristics.2. The uniqueness and difference between the traditional village and residential culture areas in Dien Bien region are based on natural geographical conditions and cultural geographic conditions. |
