Buddhist temple gardens have been regard as a communication and public activity space for people since ancient times. They play a very important role in people’s lives. Studies of Buddhist temple gardens are beneficial to their heritage and development in contemporary society. On the other hand, Taiwan has many excellent contemporary Buddhist temple garden practice results. Therefore, this paper selected contemporary Taiwan Buddhist temple gardens as the research object and summarized the development and characteristics of them through combing.(In this paper, "Contemporary Taiwan" refers to the time range from 1987 to present time.) This paper used literature research method, field research method and comparative method, and selected Violet Bamboo Grove Buddhist Temple and Water-Moon Monastery as two cases for in-depth analysis and comparative analysis to summarize the similarities and differences of characteristics. Through the study, this paper can provide reference for future design and construction of Buddhist temple gardens in Chinese Mainland.This subject consists of two parts. The first part is about the development and characteristics of Buddhist temple gardens from ancient India to China and Taiwan. The second part is about the in-depth analysis and comparative analysis of the two case studies.This paper includes six chapters. Chapter 1 is Introduction, including the research background, research significance and content, research status review, research method, study limitations and research framwork. Chapter 2 is about the background influencing the development of Taiwan buddhist temple gardens, including the origin of buddhist temple gardens in India, the prototype of the buddhist temple gardens and the development and characteristics of buddhist temple gardens in Chinese Mainland. Chapter 3 is about the development of Taiwan Buddhist temple gardens, including the development and characteristics of Taiwan Buddhist temple gardens before and after 1987. Chapter 4 is about the case study of contemporary Taiwan Buddhist temple gardens, including analysis of the background overview, planning and landscape of Buddhist temple gardens. Chapter 5 is about comparative analysis of the two case studies, also including comparative analysis of the background overview, planning and landscape of Buddhist temple gardens and summarize the similarities and differences of characteristics. Chapter 6 is the conclusions and discussions, including two parts. One is about characteristics of contemporary Taiwan Buddhist temple gardens covering design concept, function, layout, style and landscape elements. The other is the enlightenment to Chinese Mainland.
