City Square, seen as the living room of a city, is public space for leisure,entertainment and outdoor activities. However, as each family pursues various decoration of the living room, City Square is the best place for a city reflect its local culture. Ever since the development of human civilization, each nation has its own language and geographical and cultural characteristics. It is our responsibility not only to preserve the legacy but also to protect the local culture of the area when we absorb the modern technology. Chinese traditional culture is assimilating into foreign civilization which allows it to slip away, and we should be alerted and try to reserve and further these areal cultures for the future generations. Hence the design of city square is closely related with expression of regional culture, and is an important window to show the features of the city.Therefore, this dissertation is intend to study on regional culture to understand the significance of it to city culture and landscape development. And the main purpose of the paper is researching on how to permeate geographic features into the design of city square to convey culture and pass it on. At first, the author will summarize city square’s characteristics by categorizing it historically and explain relevant conceptions and features making the effort to point out the ongoing problems of modern city plazas.Then the thesis is going to methodologically analyze ways and ideas of designing city square which expressed areal culture. It will focus on those methods and thoughts to propose feasible techniques for the problems encountered in designing of city squares.In the end, through the investigation of Luo Yang City Yan Shi Luo God Plaza and Yan Shi areal culture and the geographic features around Luo river, the author tries to conclude the necessity and importance of the Luo Yang City Yan Shi Luo God Plaza’s design based on the city’s local environment, culture and economy by studying from the sculpture, greening, paving, public facilities of the city which seep the essence of regional spirit into the square design, and hopefully to set a referential example for afterwards city culture expression in city square design.
