China has a "high energy consumption, high pollution and high emissions" development mode, arousing the ecological environment and ecological pressure problems, widely "criticism". Currently, in the process of rapid urbanization in China, the rapid expansion of urban space has a profound impact on economic activity, cultural and social consciousness, land use change and the protection of ecological environment, and leads to characteristics and the spatial pattern of regional carbon emissions and carbon footprint change. Researching on interaction relations, the response mechanism and feedback process of urban spatial expansion and the carbon footprint, has a positive effect to deepen the understanding of the development of urbanization and low carbon geography-ecological process and the effect mechanism, has the vital significance on the scientific guidance and control of urban space growth and low carbon development mode. From the perspective of the urban space growth, the research supported by RS and GIS technology, dissect change characters of carbon footprint and it’s ecological in Xi’an and analyze explore relationship between urban spatial growth and the change of carbon footprint, then present alternative policies and the model of low carbon economy development in Xi’an. The research conclusions are as follows:(1) The space and temporal variations characteristics of land-use in Xi’an are: urban land use with obvious increasing; woodland and grassland constant decreasing; garden area increasing; arable continual decreasing; water with change of increasing first and after reducing; unused proportion continual declining.(2) There is a fluctuations trend in growth of carbon footprints from1999to2011in Xi’an city, with an average speed of1.50%; besides, the carbon footprint with far higher than the average speed in1999,2004and2009was obviously increased. It was very remarkably correlative between the area of urban construction land and the total of carbon footprint in Xi’an from2000to2011. Spatially, the carbon footprint shows remarkable regional differences.(3) Levels of carbon footprints of urban area of Xi’an present the following characteristics(2010):(①Carbon footprints of urban area in Xi’an:Baqiao district> Lianhu district> Xincheng district>Yanta district> Beilin district.②In the street level, the spatial distribution of carbon footprints with three characteristics of high value area, and the difference between regions is obvious.(4) Compared with other districts in Xi’an, both carbon emissions and carbon footprint in Yanta has topped. Some affecting factors were discovered. For example, industrial park, the real estate industry as well as economy is developing fast; the degree of energy utilization technology and new energy development lag behind the speed of economic development; The traditional high carbon, such as coal and oil fossil energy is still in the energy structure as the main body. Therefore, with the development of low-carbon economy, adjustment the energy structure, improvement the efficiency of energy utilization, utilization of clean energy, reduce carbon footprints, control the real estate industry development.(5) Ecological effects of carbon footprints assessed, there is a growing tendency for the value of carbon footprint year by year. Carbon footprint value of Xi’an is9.74104/hm2in2008, increased by4.20104/hm2than2005, with an average annual growth rate of28.00%. Its in2008is1.85times than that of4.94104/hm2. Carbon footprint value in2011is14.02104/hm2, with an average annual growth rate of about17.81%, increased by4.88104/hm2than that of2005, is1.53times than that of2008, and is2.84times that of2005. Energy intensity of carbon footprint in each district and county are reduced year by year.(6) The dynamic response and feedback mechanisms between urban spatial growth and the carbon footprint mainly reflected in the growth of urban space and hosted by the industry activities and the change relationship between land use mode and the carbon emissions. Xian city low carbon growth and the management control of the space, should focus on the low carbon management aspects about industrial activity and land use.
