With the development of the railway construction and the promotion of the transportation speed, the performances of the rail milling train grinding device need to be improved. The present milling device is a complex electrom echanical system with numerous parts and a high price. Thus, it is necessary to improve the system and control the cost. Trimming is an important tool of redesign of products by the advantages of simplification and optimization, while function analysis is the basic of trimming. To a complex mechanical system, it is difficult to determine the hierarchical level during function analysis. Usually, decision making relies on personal experience and operations are obscure and subjective. The implement process and the analysis result depending on the operator differ significantly. Based on the above thinking, this paper develop s the research work to solve the above problems.To improve the objectivity of function analysis operation, a new function analysis method is proposed based on the reverse engineering, called the functional back tracking method. Firstly, it focuses on contact interfaces and begins with the object of main function of system, i.e., the Target. Then, the function carrier(s) of function is defined backwardly. Similarly, this step is done layer by layer. Consequently, elements and functions of the system are all identified altern atively from locality to the whole. The target is beginning of the iteration operation, the contact interface is the link of the iteration operation and the end of the operation is the traverse of elements.Furthermore, the function back tracking method is combined with trimming to build a new model for reconstruction innovation by using TRIZ solving tools. This model contains three basic steps, including the functional modeling, the component trimming and the functional reconstruction. The three steps link up with each other.Finally, the functional model of the milling device is reconstructed based on the above reconstruction innovation model. The MPVs of the milling device are extracted to be the optimization goal and the function back tracking method is used to build the function model of the milling device. The, the value evaluation method is used to find the trimming object and the TRIZ tools for problem solving are involved to solve problems created by trimming. Thus, an innovation solution of the milli ng device is obtained consequently.In summary, this paper is organized by the combination of theoretical research and application research. It is aimed at solving the definition problem of the element level and exploring the method of functional reconstru ction innovation. The validity and practicability of the functional backward method and the proposed model are verified on the milling device.
