Since ancient times, irrigation was the lifeblood of the cultivation of agricultural production.Water conservancy was an important part of the social productive forces. It was an important standard to measure the agriculture and social progress, and also reflected the ruling ability of the government.The nation paid great attention to the water conservancy.Water conservancy would bring prosperity, The prosperous water conservancy would bring thriving agriculture, too. At last, the prosperous agriculture would bring social stability and prosperity, whereas the opposite.After the founding of New China, in order to promote economic development and the construction of modernization, the party and the government had formulated a series of policies to promote the development of China’s water conservancy construction. The author of the thesis selected her hometown Dunhuang where in desert oasis of Hexi corridor,inspected and summarized their irrigation and water conservancy construction of the period from 1950 s to 1980 s.Dunhuang is located in the end of western Hexi Corridor of Gansu Province,which is a major agricultural area rely on the snow melt of Qilian Mountains to irrigate. It is also one of the important commodity grain base of western Hexi Corridor. Water is the lifeblood of the desert oasis. The Water resources development is an important safeguard for the sustained and stable development of industrial and agricultural and other undertakings of Dunhuang.The thesis discusses the picture of Dunhuang farmland water conservancy construction which lead in the party and government after the founding of New China.Although there are many problems during the construction, but also make the great achievements.Especially the construction of the Dang River reservoir project is still in use, it has an immeasurable significance for the development of Dunhuang society right now.The thesis mainly focus on the construction of irrigation and water conservancy of Dunhuang at the period from 1950 s to 1980 s. It make full use of literature as well as detailed memories of the parties to study the irrigation and water conservancy construction of this period. Firstly, by understanding the overview of natural conditions and water conservancy construction before the founding of Dunhuang, this paper discusses the conditions for conducting irrigation and water conservancyconstruction of Dunhuang. Secondly, it divided into three stages to show the building history of irrigation and water conservancy of Dunhuang at the period from 1950 s to1980s, which including the initial period, tortuous period of development and a new phase of water conservancy construction. An analysis of the Dunhuang typical hydraulic engineering- the Reservoir construction process of Dang River, when the construction problems and countermeasures exist, as well as the construction of the Dang River Reservoir bring great changes for the people’s production and life.Finally,we make an objective analysis to the achievements and lessons learned from irrigation and water conservancy construction process, which as complete as possible to reveal the history of this irrigation and water conservancy construction. It reflects the profound influence of Dunhuang farmland water conservancy construction.
