Objective:A retrospective study of focused ultrasound ablation for submucosaluterine fibroids with size smaller than5cm was done to evaluate the safetyand efficacy.Methods:Fourty-three patients with43submucosal uterine fibroids with sizesmaller than5cm were treated with focused ultrasound ablation in Suiningcentral hospital of Sichuan province. All the adverse effects occurred duringand immediately after the ablation and the non-perfused volume ratio(NPVR)wereevaluated.Duringthefollow-upperiodof1year,theadversereactions of patients and the relationship between reactions and the ablationwere studied, and the improvement of clinical symptoms related to fibroidsof patients were also assessed. At last, the safety and effecacy of focusedultrasound ablation for submucosal uterine fibroids was evaluated. Results:From July2011to Feburary2014, Fourty-three patients with43submucosal uterine fibroids with size smaller than5cm were treated with HIFU in Suining central hospital. Among them,22fibroidss were clarifiedas type Ⅰ, and the rest were type Ⅱ. The size of type Ⅱsubmucosalfibroids was larger than the size of typeⅠfibroids. The mean NPVR ofsubmucosal fibroids was87.9%. The mean NPVR for type Ⅱand type Ⅰwas91.4%and84.6%, respectively(P<0.05). The mean NPVR for fibroidsin size of1~3cm and3~5cm was83.7%and90.6%, respectively (P<0.05).The patients were asked to come back for follow-up at1,3,6and12monthsafter HIFU. The average volume shrinkage rate at each time point was52.8%,70.3%,78.2%and77.4%, respectively. Twenty-five patients havecompleted1year follow-up, symptoms related to fibroids relief wasobserved in most of the patients. Only2patients with did not achievelong-term symptom relief. The recurrence rate was0during the follow-upperiod. No serious adverse reactions or complications happened during andafter the ablation. Conclusions:Focused ultrasound ablation is safe and effective in treating patientswith submucosal uterine fibroids with size smaller than5cm. It may be analternative promising choice for submucosal uterine fibroids. Therefore, focused ultrasound ablation is worthy for further study.
