The Viburnum sargentii Koehne, deciduous shrubs of Caprifoliaceae,is widely distributed in the northeast and northwest region of China. Thebranches, leaies and fruits of Viburnum sargentii Koehne are all used asmedicines. The branch is widely used for rheumatoid arthritis andtraumatic injuries; the leaf is used for boils, ringworm and skin itching;the fruit is used for cough. Modern pharmacological studies have shownthat the Viburnum sargentii Koehne has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory,antibacterial, anticancer, and cough.Early in the last century, scholars from various countries began tostudy of Viburnum plants. With the further development of the extraction, separation and identification techniques, scholars found a variety ofchemical constituents in the plants, including terpenoids, flavonoids, phenylpropanoids, terpenoids, phenols, steroids, alkaloids, etc. Modernpharmacological studies have shown that Viburnum sargentii Koehne fruithas good efficacy in the treatment of chronic bronchitis, cough. However, the overall study of the fruits of Viburnum sargentii Koehne is not deep, and its chemical constituents have not been reported. In order to developand make full use of this plant resources, the chemical constituents ofthe fruits of the plant were studied in this report, which is mainly aboutthe isolation and the structural identification of the phenols. This report includes three parts as follows: 1. Referring to the literature review, the research progress ofchemical constituents and pharmacological effects of Viburnum Linn.andthe fruit of Viburnum sargentii Koehne are reviewed.2. The phenolic constituents of Viburnum sargentii Koehne fruit wereisolated: Viburnum sargentii Koehne fruit was about7kg, with14L70%ethanol solution soaking for3times, and ever time was7days. By recoveryof ethanol, the concentrated solution was subjected to D-101macroporousresin column, Viburnum sargentii Koehne extract150g was obtained from30%ethanol elution part. The extract is isolated with the silica gelcolumn chromatography, polyamide column chromatography and HPLC. At last, seven phenols were obtained: I、II、III、IV、V、VI、VII。3. By physico-chemical property and spectral analysis methods, theseven compounds were identified as:(-)-epicatechin (I),5,7,4′-trihydroxy-flavonoid-8-C-β-D-glucopyranoside (II),1-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-2-[4-(3-α-L-rhamnopyranoxypropyl)-2-methoxyphenoxy]-1,3-propanediol(erythro)(III),1-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-2-[4-(3-α-L-rhamnopyranoxypropyl)-2-methoxyphenoxy]-1,3-propanediol(threo)(IV),4-hydroxylphenolO-(6-O-oleuropeoyl)-β-D-glucopyranoside (V),3-methoxy-4-hydroxylphenol O-(6-O-oleuropeoyl)-β-D-glucopyranoside)(VI), quercetin-3-O-rutinoside(VII).
